I won’t beat around the bush. You absolutely need a mobile website for your business. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the numbers.

Over 80 million Americans own smartphones and the number continues to rise. That includes 35% of American adults. And most of these owners browse the web with their phones, frequently.

In fact, 25% of Americans use smart phones to browse the web more often than they use computers for web browsing.

Cell phones are now used more for data, such as web browsing, than for talking.

90% of smart phones users use their phones every single day, and 80% of them use them for shopping.

So we now know that a lot of consumers are using their smart phones to browse the web, and often to search for businesses in their area or to shop online.

First of all, let’s be clear about what a mobile website actually does for you. It does not replace your main website and it’s not necessarily a separate website, per se. You can put all of the same information on your mobile website that you have on your normal website.

But, if you have a mobile version of your website, when a user visits your website on their smart phone, that person sees a version of your website that looks much better than a normal website does on a smartphone, and that user will be much more likely to stay on your website if you have a mobile version.

A good example of a business that absolutely needs a mobile version of their website is a restaurant. Let’s look at some examples.

This website does not have a mobile version. Notice how you cannot see the whole form on the right that the website wants you to use. It’s cut off. This website is severely lacking in case smart phone users land on the page. They will have to scroll over just to use the website the way it’s intended to be used, and will be much more likely to just go away and look for a website more mobile-friendly.

Notice how the mobile-friendly website is one column and a smart phone user would not have to scroll sideways at all to use it. Everything is concise and easily usable and readable. All the buttons can be seen without scrolling and it would be simple and quick to use this website if one used a mobile phone to navigate it.

So you can see how having a mobile version of your website has become an absolute must in this day and age, and if you have one, you are much more likely to keep web users where you want them…on your website!

But how does it work, exactly? If you have a mobile website, when a smartphone user visits your site, a simple code installed by your web programmer or designer will recognize that the visit has come from someone using a smartphone and will automatically show them your mobile version.

The good news for most small businesses is that small business websites are usually simple and don’t have too many pages, and a mobile website will typically cost less than a regular website. For a few hundred dollars you can usually get a mobile website with at least one home page, depending on your needs. Many web designers these days offer package deals that include mobile website design, as well.

Google has increasingly pushed its advertising customers to create special mobile websites because, as we know all too well, most conventional websites look awful on a smartphone.

Now, Google’s providing more research to back up its advice.

The search ad giant is hoping, of course, that the better mobile experience people have, the more they will use Google search to find sites and products.

A poor mobile experience reflects badly not only on the sites but on Google searches that sent them there. That’s especially worrisome today as Facebook, to name one rival, and Twitter, to name another, double down on mobile advertising.

And it happens that Google has some relatively new mobile ads to hawk as well.

A few of the highlights (or, in some cases, low points):

  • Two-thirds of smartphone users say a mobile-friendly site makes them more likely to buy a company’s product or service, and 74% say they’re more likely to return to the site later. “Mobile is creating massive opportunity,” says Jason Spero, head of Google’s global mobile sales and strategy.
  • 61% says that if they don’t find what they’re looking for (probably within about five seconds), they’ll click away to another site. Half say that even if they like a business, they’ll use its site less often if it doesn’t work well on their smartphone. “This is a wake up call,” says Spero. “You will lose customers at the moments that matter” without a site specifically made for mobile devices.
  • 72% of users say a mobile-friendly site is important to them, but a nearly unanimous 96% have visited sites that aren’t. “When you offer users a desktop experience on mobile,” Spero notes, “it’s kind of crap.”

Google’s advice: Create a fast mobile site with big buttons and text, keep steps to complete tasks to a minimum, and–you knew this was coming–promote the site with Google mobile ads for the two-thirds of people who use search to find a site.
